Welcome to AI Jest Daily.

What is AI Jest Daily?

It’s a site with daily cartoons, illustrated and captioned entirely by AI.

How does that work?

AI Jest Daily has gone through two eras so far:

Pre-October 2023 era

Cartoons made up to October 3 followed a three-step process.

1. I generated an image in Midjourney using a “[scene], New Yorker cartoon” prompt.

2. I fed the resulting image into Bing Chat (later ChatGPT Plus) and asked the image recognition to review and describe it.

3. I asked ChatGPT (GPT-4 model) for funny captions based on the description.

That’s it!

From then on, it was about picking the most successful captions.

Post-October 2023 era

From October 4, after DALL-E 3 preview was released in the Bing Image Creator, I switched up the process, so it looked like this:

1. Generate ideas for a one-panel cartoon using ChatGPT (GPT-4 model).

2. Ask DALL-E 3 to create these cartoons directly

That’s it!

DALL-E 3 is exceptionally good at one-panel cartoons, so this switch was a no-brainer.

Why AI Jest Daily?

Because I thought it’d be a fun experiment.

Large language models aren’t exactly known for their humor, but they do occasionally get somewhat close to comedy.

The daily cartoons are bound to be hit-and-miss. Some will be funny; some will suck.

I let AI take the wheel, resisting the urge to insert my own caption and cartoon ideas.
